*SALLY. SALLY HO. SALLY. SALLY HO* (Sang to the tune of ‘Daddy Cool’ by Boney M)
I met Sally back in 2015 when she joined the tutoring centre that I worked at – I think she started around a month after me. It was a small team of 4 teachers (including the owner) and before she’d arrived, there had been a bit of unnecessary drama involving an existing teacher and the teacher that I replaced but life got much better when Sally arrived. I remember taking her out for lunch to Tai Hing on the first day and we’ve been friends ever since.
In my opinion, the best things about Sally are: she likes to do weird dances with me in public (and in private, but not in a sexy way), she is a fellow avid sticker collector, likes ugly-cute things, enjoys a photobooth as much as I do, rarely says no when it comes to ordering more food and she’s Canadian so she’s really kind and polite – one time, she held the door open for someone and said thank you when they walked through…
She also works really hard, has a weird great sense of humour and is really good at drawing which you’ll be able to see for yourself very soon!
Hi Sally, tell us a little about yourself.
Haiii… I’m Sally. I’m from Toronto and currently teaching English in an elementary school in Hong Kong. I have the mind of a goldfish hence I’m not very good with names or numbers or a lot of other things. At the moment I spend most of my free time drawing and doing outdoor workouts. You’re more than welcome to be my next victim/follower on IG: artbysasaa (disclaimer: I’m not that great).
During these unprecedented times, how are you doing?
Honestly, March and April have been the craziest and busiest months so being able to work from home is a blessing in disguise. I have been swamped with WORK, WORK and more WORK (how exciting). Despite the school suspension, we are still marking homework and recording teaching videos for our students. Apart from that, I tutor part-time but because of the pandemic all of my lessons are taught online and the prep time is a bit more time-consuming. To make this time even more exciting, I have been swamped with deadlines for my full-time long distance learning course. I know… a full-time teacher, a full-time student and a part-time tutor, what the hell am I thinking? Well I’m happy to let you know that I’ve just submitted my final assignment and having that out of the way is 10 times better. I shall be spoiling myself with a lot of NETFLIX and finally spending some quality time with family and friends.
What are you most looking forward to doing when freedom is upon us again?
Hikes, having picnics by the harbour and going on food dates with my friends. I MISS FRESH AIR, DELICIOUS FOOD AND MY FRIENDS.
If you could go back in time to change one thing, what would it be?
Absolutely nothing. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I changed my life trajectories.
Do you collect anything?
What did you want to be when you were younger?
I wanted to be a painter and that was shut down instantly by my mother (Asian parents are all about practicality). Then I studied to become a lawyer but that went out the window after I did an internship in a law firm during my second year in uni.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Able to say bye to social anxiety.
Do you live by any piece of advice or motto?
Keep moving forward and never look back.
The only way is up.
If money was no object, what would you do all day?
I would get on a private jet and spend my day on an uninhabited tropical island.
What’s the most interesting thing that you can see out of your window right now?
This kid savouring a pack of chips (Where are his parents?)
What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever eaten?
Let’s change that to “the most unusual thing I’ve ever drunk”, which is fish sauce. Long story short, my friend’s mother stored her fish sauce in an empty apple juice bottle. We didn’t realise that until I gulped that nasty sauce down (I was very thirsty at the time…)
If I were to come round to your house for dinner, what would you cook for me?
Appetiser: mussels and clams with white wine and garlic
Entrée: seafood risotto and Chinese style steamed shrimp
Dessert: Irene’s moon-cake (of course) and a soft serve cone
What is your earliest memory?
This might be a bit dark – I remember sitting on the staircase and watching my mum and dad argue. That’s the only memory I have of my dad.
Which celebrity would you like to meet at Starbucks for a coffee?
Hands down, Angelina Jolie.
What would be your ‘death row meal’?
Appetiser: fried buffalo wings with blue cheese dip and nachos
Entrée: sushi (taro and spicy tuna), rib-eye steak and fries
Dessert: Haagen-Dazs (caramel and coffee)
Ideally, what would you like to do for your birthday this year?
Fun fact: I’ve never held a birthday party mostly due to my social anxiety. I’m more than happy to spend it like any other day but with food I like and perhaps a tiny cake (that would be more than sufficient). If anyone writes me a birthday card, I might bawl like a child LOL
What would your ideal weekend look like?
Saturday: A challenging/sweaty hike and follow up with some good food by the harbour
Sunday: Quality time with mi familia
What is your biggest fear?
Being stuck in the middle of an argument.
What makes you angry/biggest pet peeves?
People going on their phones at the dinner table.
What’s your most prized possession and why?
Quite embarrassing but it’s this stuffed toy I have on my bed. I can only sleep well knowing it’s next to me.
Which of your personality traits are you most proud of and why?
I am a great listener. I think 80% of the time when we experience problems in our lives, we are conscious enough to know what to do but we just need that slight affirmation and reminder from a friend. I’m that friend. I’m always there to listen when you’re in need of someone who you can trust and vent to. I’m empathetic and logical. I give my friends the most honest advice and I never sugar-coat. At the end of the day, if you need that slap in the face, I’m more than happy to do it because I genuinely care and “I’m allergic to bullshit”.
A genie gives you three wishes: what are they?
Giving everyone in the world great health and happiness. Finally, setting Genie free (very unoriginal but clearly inspired by the movie).
What’s the first thing you look for in a partner and/or friend?
Someone who is driven like me and shares similar morals and values.
What is your favourite memory of ours?
There are so many, Queen Bee! But if I have to choose one, it would be that time you came over and had dinner with me and my mum. I’m quite a private person so you can consider yourself special (wink).
