Ah Sarah Blackie, where do I begin?!
I met Sarah way back in our first year of uni in 2009. Our friendship began as all of the greatest ones do: during a game of spin the bottle.
We had a few mutual friends and ended up spending a lot more time together. In our second and third years of uni, we lived together in a lovely house owned by a cute old couple called Malcolm and Brenda with our pals Marianne and Sadie.
Sarah is one my favourite people in the world as she’s non-judgemental – I can walk into her room, shake my butt at her with no context, walk out again and she would just laugh and carry on with whatever she’s doing. She’s not as big a fan of when I crawl into her room and pretend to be the girl from The Grudge…I’m not really sure why.
She laughs a lot, which I really like because it makes me feel like a professional comedian. Oh, and she also loves charity shopping and going to car boot sales, introduced me to burlesque shows, supported me through my lip piercing (which lasted a whole summer) and is, for lack of a better word, quirky. Like the beautiful lead in an indie film.
I also lived with Sarah and Muesli (the pug) for a year when I came back from Hong Kong in late 2017 – we went through some difficult times together. Between us, we went through a job loss, not knowing what to do with our lives, breakups etc. Luckily, we made our way out of the tunnel and Sarah is here to answer all of my silly questions, as always.
Hi Sarah, tell us a little about yourself.
I’m Sarah from Surrey. I’m a ward manager in a hospital for people with mental health problems and learning disabilities, been nursing for 8 years now! I live in a flat with my sister and my pug, Muesli. In my spare time I like taking Muesli for long walks, watching Netflix, eating yum food, seeing my friends and having some drinks when lockdown isn’t making us all hermits.
In these unprecedented times, how are you doing and what are you doing to keep yourself occupied?
Well while most people are in lockdown, I’m still going to work! It’s been pretty busy but we are generally doing pretty well. In the evenings we were watching Handmaids Tale, but finished that and now watching a series called Fortitude which is a slow burner but pretty good! Also watched movies: The Spy Who Dumped Me and Trial of Fire have both been good watches! And yeah at weekends taking Muesli for nice walks, even managed to discover some local lakes which I didn’t know about so that was a treat. This Friday me and the sis are doing Mexican food and Ru Pauls drag race which I’m excited for!
What are you most looking forward to doing when freedom is upon us again?
When freedom returns I am looking forward to pub, meals out, seeing family and friends and going clothes shopping!
What did you want to be when you were younger?
When I was younger I wanted to be an RSPCA officer or a binman/street cleaner. High hopes, I know.
What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest achievement is probably progressing within my job – getting 2 promotions within a year at my company. And also qualifying as a nurse and buying (part of) my flat!
If money was no object, what would you do all day?
If money, calories and alcoholism were no object, I would lounge around drinking wine and buying stuff on ASOS.
Do you collect anything?
I collect the souls of innocents.
What’s the best gift you’ve been given?
A holiday to Croatia. And a tropical fish tank.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In 5 years time I would love to have a house, a baby (or 2), a French bulldog and be in a similar job probably but maybe a grade higher.
If you could go back in time to change one thing, what would it be?
If I could go back in time to change one thing in my life it would be to work harder at things when I was younger, and not take things too personally! If it was to change anything throughout history it would be to stop one of the big wars from happening. Or maybe stop Coronavirus or something.
What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
It probably really isn’t that daring, but it would be something like asking someone for a phone number, or flashing in public, or doing a photoshoot in my underwear!
If I were to come round to your house for dinner, what would you cook for me?
If Queenie Lee was to come for dinner I would have to make a lot of food! My specialities are Jambalaya (chicken, chorizo and prawn rice dish) and spaghetti bolognese. I would just make whatever my guest wanted!
What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever eaten?
Probably chicken feet in Hong Kong? I’m pretty up for eating most things, not sure what would count as unusual…
Which celebrity would you like to meet at Starbucks for a coffee?
I would meet Miley Cyrus.
What’s the most interesting thing that you can see out of your window right now?
There is fuck all view outside my window – just bloody builders!
What is your earliest memory?
My earliest memory is having to pee in a potty. So degrading.
What would be your ‘death row meal’?
My death row meal would be steak, lobster, chunky chips, a bottle of white wine and then a GU dessert.
Do you live by any piece of advice or motto?
My motto/advice is “everything happens for a reason.”
Ideally, how would you like to spend your birthday this year?
I was supposed to be at a hen do for my birthday, but that’s cancelled! I would love to go to seaside or Legoland with my stepson.
What’s the silliest argument you’ve ever been in?
Silliest argument was with my ex. He had clearly paid to upgrade the sky Tv so he could watch a boxset. He vehemently denied this and it was infuriating. The bill was like £50 higher than usual and I know I didn’t bloody do it!
What is your biggest fear?
Death and spiders
What makes you angry?
People who spit in the street make me angry! Saw someone do it this morning, I was very cross.
A genie gives you three wishes: what are they?
My 3 wishes would be: cure/vaccine for coronavirus, 5 million pounds, all people who are sad to not be sad anymore.
What’s your most prized possession and why?
What personality traits do you share with your relatives?
Safety conscious, anxious, fairly intelligent/bookish, bit shy!
Which of your personality traits are you most proud of and why?
I’m proud of my empathy, my bossiness and being a bit sarcastic.
Do you ever wish you were raised differently?
Ooh, that’s a deep question. If I was raised differently, I think I would have liked a more affectionate upbringing, but generally I think everything happens for a reason and I wouldn’t have been me without my upbringing!
What’s the first thing you look for in a partner and/or friend?
Loads of money! Haha, no. I hate arrogance so avoid anyone arrogant. I’m mainly attracted to quirkiness I think and just friendliness really.
What is your favourite memory of ours?
I have so many good memories of you Queenie! I like our trips to London, I like our adventures and hang times from Uni, I like when you lived with me and you were there to come home to, I liked our adventures in Hong Kong…boyfriends slightly ruined it but hey ho! My favourite I couldn’t possibly say, but I always feel a bit uplifted when I’ve been to see you and my life wouldn’t have been the same without you!
